Problem:
The client needed to develop a smart dog collar targeting dog owners residing in private
homes who prioritize their pets’ safety. This innovative product aimed to surpass traditional
solutions such as physical fences that limit dogs’ movement and in-ground fences that use
electric boundaries. The smart collar envisioned by the client aimed to introduce more
effective features:
- Virtual Fences: Allow owners to create digital boundaries to prevent pets from leaving
designated areas. - Virtual Leash: Ensures dogs stay within a safe distance from owners.
- GPS module for precise location tracking.
- Step counter to monitor daily fitness activity.
- Built-in microphone-speaker combo for remote voice commands.
- Optional camera for real-time video streaming to a user’s smartphone.
- Embedded Linux platform for robust functionality.
- IMX6 platform for high-performance camera module.
- AWS IoT integration using MQTT protocol for seamless communication.
The client approached Infinity-tech to develop a comprehensive solution including a crossplatform mobile application, backend infrastructure, firmware for the collar, and a web-based
administration portal. This integrated system would enhance pet safety and provide owners
with advanced monitoring and control capabilities.
Solution:
PCB Design and Firmware Development
We designed a custom PCB and developed firmware for the smart collar, ensuring seamless
integration and optimal performance. The firmware supports Over-the-air (OTA) firmware
updates ensure new features and security patches. We implemented energy-saving
measures such as prioritizing Wi-Fi over LTE to conserve battery life, disabling non-essential
functions when the battery is low, and activating sleep mode when the collar is not in use.
These features ensure the collar remains efficient and reliable, providing continuous
monitoring and control for pet owners.
Mobile App
We developed an Android app in which users can set up automatic behavioral corrections
and give instant commands. The system uses business logic to create virtual fences and
apply commands via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or LTE. Integrated with Mapbox, users can easily set
up virtual fences by selecting points on a map.

Automatic Corrections
Users can configure automated corrections like sound, vibration, or static signals. If a dog
leaves the virtual fence area and does not return within 30 minutes, owners can locate their
pets via GPS. The collar can also activate an encouragement signal when the dog is
approaching home.
Instant Commands
Users can issue instant commands to stop unwanted behaviors or praise good behavior via
the app.
Training Module
The app provides a 21-day training program by Cesar Millan to help dogs get accustomed
to the collar and learn boundary rules.
IoT AWS Cloud Integration
- App-Device Communication: Utilizes AWS Services like IoT Hub and Service Bus for
reliable communication. - Data Retrieval: Uses AWS Redis Cache for intermediate storage and periodic
database updates. - Notifications: Sends zone changes and correction events via AWS Notification Hubs.
- Device Registration: Custom tool for registering devices in the IoT Hub during factory
flashing.
